mala

I went to Mala Brajkovic and jeweller Elke Kramer's residency opening at Alice Euphemia tonight. Mala makes some really beautiful dresses. This summer collection contains some less dressy pieces, including high waisted skirts, casual lose fitted cotton dresses with wider bottoms, and dresses that tie around the neck in bright colours- green, lavender, orange and also black. I really like those high-waisted skirts, but might have to wait for them to go on sale!

The crowd at the opening was interesting. The ladies at Alice are always lovely, and I saw Alphaville's sales assistant and a gay boy from myspace (!) The male 'fasionistas' were quite fashion forward indeed. I spotted one skinny boy wearing high-waisted skinny jeans. I'm thinking they're Cheap Monday's Eiffel Tower - WAY high waist. They look a bit odd on him and I originally thought he was a girl. I was wearing my CM and I think we were checking each other's jeans out. Apparently two ladies there were talking about my jeans - pointing at them in fact, according to my friend. I really love mine, and they better have said some nice things about them!

put your dancing shoes on

Some fabulous bands coming to our shore:

Avenue D - eletroclash duo from NYC. Will be at 'Fuck Art Lets Danse' at Greyhound Hotel in St. Kilda on 6 Nov.

Ratatat (yea!!!!!) - at Ding Dong on 17 Nov.

CSS - at Revolver on 5 Jan 07.

Also, Chick on Speed and Kid Koala+Amon Tobin will be at the Prince. I really liked Kid Koala and Amon Tobin... I also worked for their manager (who is super lovely) in Montreal for one day (only one!). But I'm not sure what they'd be like live... always a bit wary of DJ gigs...a geeky dude spinning LPs on a deck isn't all that interesting to watch (RE: Casiotone for the Painfully Alone - painfully boring...)

futurism and 'now-ism'

What is often lost in fashion today is its power to astonish and povoke. Hussein Chalayan seems to be an exception. His Spring 2007 runway spectacle wowed many. His collection addresses the subject of fashion and responds to reality in a way which look to the future, instead of the past.

While I've sort of summarised style.com's review, I really love the collection. The dresses are beautiful, finely layered, carefully pieced together and delicate. The collection overall look excitingly 'futuristic' rather than referencing the past. Go here to view the collection. Photos also from style.com

80s chic?

How bloody beautiful is this Derek Lam dress? If you have the money, buy it at net-a-porter for 2,672 pounds. Yes that is in English pounds.

bye-bye!

Goodbye low-waisted jeans, HELLO high-waisted skinnies... those Cheap Monday skyscrappers are hot. I'm a proud owner of a pair and will be rocking them with some tucked in singlets and well heeled shoes.

As the Alphaville boys mentioned, there is a 'crack epidemic' resulting from the popularity of the low-rider jeans. Aren't we sick of getting the 'eye-full of ass-crack' everytime a girl drop her phone? I was once blinded by a girl with her jeans hanging halfway down her ass. She was standing in front of me while I was seated on a tram. She was actually fit but gosh it was live porn on a tram.

I think I once flashed my bum crack at my colleague in the office when I had to crawl underneath my desk to reach the back of my computer. Ok maybe I was flirting with the guy, but I really don't think the crack is all that attractive.

enough. the low has to go.

ziggy

It's pretty rare that I watch or listen to commercial music. I'm such a snob that I thought I would never like or recommend anything I see/hear from primetime TV. But I can't help myself: this man on our Australia Idol is something special. He covered Under the Milky Way, took on both Bowie (Under Pressure) and Freddie Mercury in one song, and wore some ziggy startdust style eye makeup and red skinny tie. All that on national TV! His own music is even more amazing - check out Bobby Flynn on myspace - absolutely mesmerizing stuff.

skyscraper

So, now that EVERYONE on the street is wearing the low-waisted skinny jeans, fashionistas have been talking about the new jeans trend. Some says the boyfriend jeans (yuck) and many mentioned the high-waisted skinny jeans. It seems opinions are split regarding this trend. And I think it is a difficult trend to pull off- you really need to have the right body and the right cut for it to work. If the jeans are light blue and have wide/straight legs, then they would look like the dreaded mom jeans (horror horror). For the skinny versions, they might make your hips look huge or flatten your bum and/or make it look long. Look at the lovely Scarlett:

Seen here on the Imitation of Christ Spring 2006 runway, she looks super bottom heavy.

However, if worn right, they'd control your tummy area and elongate your bottom half especially when worn with heels.
Cheap Mondays have two new high-waisted jeans out: the skyscraper and the eiffel tower. The eiffel tower is ridiculously high but the skyscraper seems to be at an appropriate length. I'm going to check them out at Alphaville in Prahran tomorrow.

maison martin margiela

Martin Margiela is such a superb tailor. Each of his pieces are designed, measured and cut to perfection to create the desired silhouette. His Spring 2007 RTR collection looks modern, smart and sexy. He used bold colours and made sharp jackets and caped silhouettes. For some reason I think there is something slightly sinister about those boxy, shoulder padded tops, but I adore them!

sleepy hollow

Think Tim Burton and Alfred Hitchcock. The dress is gothic and sweet, dark and delicious. If only someone would give me $715, I would totally rock this outfit...Check out Eventide, a New York based duo. This Bubble Dress and the Bow Dress can be purchased here.

being a girl...

I love the lace! These fabulous outfits are from Erdem, fresh from Milan Fashion Week. A new find for me I will have to keep an eye out for this label. I really like the creme colored lacy stockings - they were also seen at Anna Sui last season and Johnathan Aston has something similiar - I might have to invest on a pair!
